Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe - 2060 Words
In todayââ¬â¢s society, people cannot afford to miss out on changes in trends, or technology. With the ever-rapid pace of the growing economy, one must be able and be willing to adapt and accept changes. Perspectives within different cultures and societies may differ with changes. People need to teach each other that much like the changing of the seasons, our way of life in time will also change. It should not be something forced, and that a way of life for one may not be the best way for others. People should also know that when trying to change a culture or society; itââ¬â¢s better to incorporate their religions, beliefs, and traditions to help gradually make the changes. Forcing something on a person or society would only lead to chaos. In Africa back then, if you had many wives, a lot of kids, was a great farmer rather you raised cattle or grew vegetables, respected the elders and customs of the community, you will reach a higher status and have respect within the community. Often times, once you received recognition in the community for obtaining Great wealth, you would often receive word by the elders who have met, and agreed to have you become an elder. Thus reaching the highest status in the community and becoming greatly revered. Another custom back then is when a warrior (a man) came back home after a war with another tribe, victorious, and brought with him the head of the enemy there would be a celebration. It may seem barbaric to you and but that was how it was. Actions such as these were being done as far back as Genghis Khan. Another culture they had, was if there was a crime that was against another clan, the affected clan would meet up with all the elders to decide if they would go to war. There would be a decision made if they would accept compensation for the crime that was committed against them, one of the compensation could be that the clan receives a young girl who is a virgin. Back then women like objects to use as trade. They may even accept a boy that can be used to work doing the working

American Horror Story the Affects of Sex and Violence in Media Free Essays
Media Analysis: American Horror Story American Horror Story is an FX horror-drama television show, as well as an anthology series; each season of the show has a different cast and storyline. The show was created by Ryan Murphy (creator of the FOX show Glee) and Brad Falchuk (producer of Nip/Tuck), and premiered on October 5, 2011. The first season of the show follows the Harmon family as they settle into their new home in Los Angeles. We will write a custom essay sample on American Horror Story: the Affects of Sex and Violence in Media or any similar topic only for you Order Now They are unaware, however, that the mansion is haunted by its many former owners. The two main topics in which we covered in class that are utilized in the show are frightening and sexual content in media. The focus of the first season is on infidelity and temptation. Ben and Vivien Harmon moved to Los Angeles from Boston with their daughter Violet in an attempt to start over and save their fragile marriage, after Ben had an affair with one of his students. Although they think the move will help, it only worsens their situation. The cable series is full of as much violence and sexual content as the writers and producers can get away with. With multiple instances of violence, sex, and nudity in every episode, the show draws a very large audience. American Horror Story is FXââ¬â¢s most viewed series, with the pilot of the first season bringing in 3. 2 million viewers. The show gained viewers as it progressed, and the premiere of the second season had 3. 85 million viewers. In an interview by AfterElton. com contributor Brian Juergens, when asked about what he wanted to bring to the horror genre, producer Brad Falchuk said ââ¬Å"In the case of the horror genre, your main goal is to scare people. You want people to be a little bit off balance afterwards. You want people to have their friends sleep over that night. And you want to deliver iconic images that stay with people. â⬠The writers of American Horror Story make use of many of the subjects from chapter 13 of our textbook. There are many realistic scenarios that occur in the series, such as a home invasion and multiple murders. This is an example of stimulus generalization. Because many of the scenes are highly realistic, the generalization stimulus is very high, which consequently increases the fearful or emotional response. American Horror Story is rated TV-MA, which means that it is intended for mature audiences, and not children (usually age 17 or older). It also has a sub rating of LSV (offensive language, strong sexual content, and violence and gore). R-rated videos and magazines contain far more profane and explicit sexual content than network television shows, but sexual remarks and suggestions are becoming ever more frequent in public media today. In American Horror Story there are elements of the four major themes of sexuality in media. Sexual scenes in the show include examples of domination (sexual control of a person), exploitation (coercion of one person by way of power or status), reciprocity (consensual sex), and autoeroticism (self-stimulation, such as masturbation). In the pilot of the first season Ben walks in on the housekeeper, Moira, masturbating. She tries to get him to sleep with her but he goes to another room and masturbates as well. Yet another storyline consists of Benââ¬â¢s former student, Hayden, in which he had an affair with, who shows up and tries to convince him to stay with her. These scenes, along with many others throughout the season, go back to the theme of infidelity and temptation. The trailer for the first season of American Horror Story gives the basic plot of the show. It also makes use of frightening music and sounds to get the attention of fans of the horror genre. The season two trailer also highlights each characterââ¬â¢s traits and occupations briefly (Leoââ¬â¢s photography, Shelleyââ¬â¢s sensuality, Lana Wintersââ¬â¢ love for her partner, Wendy, etc. ). These short advertisements appeal to viewers by the use of catharsis. The audience of American Horror Story wants to be scared. Itââ¬â¢s a way for them to escape, or animate, their own violent predispositions or inclinations; to purge themselves of their personal worries and apprehensions. Personally speaking, I find the sadistic and erotic nature of the show enjoyable. It allows me and other viewers to gain vicious pleasure by identifying with the immoral and shady personalities of the characters in the show. The intent of the show can be pretty well summed up by the theories of scholar and professor, Dolf Zillmann, in Fundamentals of Media Effects (Bryant and Thompson): ââ¬Å"Zillmann (1991a, 1991b) described horror as frightening because it releases empathetic responses toward victims and makes viewers apprehensive about becoming victims themselves. In other words, viewers identify with the victims and experience their terror vicariously. Horror also frightens viewers because of their apprehensions; they fear being victims themselves. Finally, horror usually features a satisfying ending that viewers enjoy. â⬠American Horror Story has had its share of controversy with viewers already. Erin Brown, contributor for the Culture and Media Institute at the Media Research Center, writes: ââ¬Å"The premiere of ââ¬Å"American Horror Storyâ⬠wasnââ¬â¢t just sexually and physically repulsive. Flashback scenes also featured a large dose of verbal and mental cruelty toward a Down syndrome girl ââ¬â including her mother, played by Jessica Lange, wishing sheââ¬â¢d aborted her. To add to the violence, sex and abuse, there were 13 versions of the word ââ¬Å"s**t,â⬠and such delightful terms as ââ¬Å"p***yâ⬠and ââ¬Å"c**ksucker. â⬠With all this objectionable content, Entertainment Weekly still named American Horror Story one of its ââ¬Å"Top Ten Things We Love this Weekâ⬠putting it on their famous ââ¬Å"Must Listâ⬠in the October 7 issue. ââ¬Å"This show has a potential to literally be shattering to all of the things that we consider to be normal,â⬠one of the actors said during production. â⬠Many parental reviews of the show describe it as disturbing, terrifying, and even repulsive. The three main age groups discussed in the Reactions to Disturbing or Frightening Media Content chapter of Fundamentals of Media Effects, 3-8, 9-12, and 12-17, are all thought to be too young for most parents. Some critics also consider American Horror Story to be a strained and overexcited mess. Though there are many frightening elements to the show, most of them are written off as cliche. The fact that in society today we are so used to seeing violence and sexual content in media, these happenings in the show are not as disconcerting as they would have been in the decades prior to the twenty-first century. Charles Booth free essay sample
The social history of 19th century London can only be deduced through the remaining surveys and various documents left from that time period. Charles Booth was an innovative surveyor and social investigator in the late 1800s and formed surveys of the life and labor of the 19th century London population. Charles Booth took initiative to look into the various areas of poverty, but also examined the possible reasons for poverty. Past surveyors did not use accurate methods to create statistics or charts. Most social investigators used observation for their respective purpose. Booth used scientific methods and created better detailed censuses and surveys of London. Booth was the first to make connections and implications of poverty from the areas in which the people lived, living conditions, religious life, and occupation. His methodologies were complex and his conclusions were based upon empirical data. Charles Booth used innovated research methods such as: detailed questionnaires, personal interviews, and visual observations to investigate the cause of poverty. We will write a custom essay sample on Charles Booth or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Certain areas in London, for example the East End, were infamously known for its poverty and unfortunate crimes. Many knew only of the conditions in the East End because of authors such as Charles Dickens and George Moore that ââ¬Å"often set their works in poorer parts of town. â⬠The conditions were overly exaggerated and were only representative of a small section of the East End. Inwood describes the situation accurately with his statement, ââ¬Å"how many people lived in squalor and malnutrition was not known, although some writers tried to quantify London poverty, on the basis of inadequate evidence. Mayhew produced many pages of statistics, but most of them referred to the ââ¬Ëstreet folkââ¬â¢, beggars, hawkers, scavengers, and entertainers, a tiny proportion of the London poor. â⬠There were other social surveys conducted before Charles Booth started his social investigation, however none were as detailed and representative of the entire London population as Booth. ââ¬Å"Investigative journalist, Henry Mayhew, reported on their interviews with the poor, while a few intrepid social explorers dressed as tramps and experienced at first-hand a night in the casual ward of a workhouse. Nonetheless, there were still no in-depth and comprehensive surveys conducted until Charles Booth. Charles Booth was commissioned by the Lord Mayor of Londonââ¬â¢s Relief Fund in 1885 to analyze the census responses. Booth felt that the census was disorganized and not an adequate indication of the social problems in London. Therefore, he took it upon himself to fix and reorganize the cen sus. The first meeting was held on April 17, 1886 for the reconstruction of the census. From 1886-1903, Booth continued to use his methodologies to gather data and research the cause of the social problems in London, specifically poverty. Charles Booth studied the integral parts of the city by examining the background information of the citizens of every street in London. He focused his efforts into three main areas: the exploration of poverty, the occupations of Londoners, and the religious influence. Poverty was a major social concern during the Victorian era, as well as a continual struggle with even the most sophisticated societies in the 21st century. Booth found the social problem of poverty an important issue to explore. Poverty maps of Charles Booth were the first color-coded maps during the late 19th century. Booth created a map that encompassed the levels of poverty and wealth with different colors ranging from black to yellow to indicate a specific level of poverty that was placed directly to the London address of the household. There were eight poverty levels labeled A-H; with the lowest class labeled with the letter A and increasing in wealth with the wealthiest class labeled with the letter H. The hierarchal poverty classification system starts at the bottom with letter A and color black, which includes the criminals, street sellers, occasional laborers, and loafers. Letter B is the color dark blue and includes the very poor, casual earners that work no more than 3 days a week, and the persons that are ââ¬Å"mentally, morally, or physically incapable of work. â⬠Letter C includes the persons of ââ¬Å"intermittent earningsâ⬠and an income of ââ¬Å"18-21s for a moderate household,â⬠laborers with irregular work,â⬠and the ââ¬Å"poor artisans. Letter D includes the ââ¬Å"small regular earners,â⬠poor, and ââ¬Å"struggle to make ends meetâ⬠but are ââ¬Å"decent steady men, paying their way and bringing up their children respectably. Letter C and D are represented by a light blue color and sometimes as purple if grouped with Letter E. Letter E includes the ââ¬Å"regular earners earning 22-30s a week,â⬠wives normally do not take trade, and boys and girls who normally do work. Letter F includes the ââ¬Å"highest paid artisans,â⬠ââ¬Å"high class laborâ⬠that makes more than 30s a week. Letter E and F are represented by the color pink. Letter G includes the ââ¬Å"lower middle classâ⬠described as ââ¬Å"hardworking sober energetic men. â⬠Letter G is signified by the color red. The wealthiest class, Letter H includes the ââ¬Å"upper middle classâ⬠that keep servants. Letter H is represented by the color yellow. All of these poverty levels are placed onto the corresponding street on the map of the household described. In order to make the poverty map, Booth enlists others to help him gather his research. Booth instructed the ââ¬Å"School Board visitorsâ⬠to visit each individual home with children that were registered with the school district and collect information. The ââ¬Å"School Board visitorsâ⬠were to collect detailed information on the house address, number of rooms that the family inhabited, rent, occupationsââ¬â¢ of the head of the household and the wife, and number of children in the household. Then the ââ¬Å"School Board visitorsâ⬠were to categorize the household into the poverty level according to the eight levels and then to assign the household to the corresponding color for the map. Due to the number of households in London, it became evident that taking a survey of every household would be too time-consuming. Therefore, a general survey of the street was also taken in addition to a small number of households on the street. The ââ¬Å"School Board visitorsâ⬠were instructed to write down notes on the street name, surveyed houses and the color associated, street condition, number of children between the ages of 3-13, and the color the street is associated with the poverty map. The end result is a color coded map of the levels of poverty specific from street to street. To inspect the social reasons for poverty, Charles Booth looked into the occupations that various household members held. Charles Booth saw industry as a major contributor to the level of poverty associated with a household. For that reason, he requested surveys and interviewed persons with particular occupations about their personal experiences to gain insight into the possible associations with poverty. Booth broke down the occupations into 18 categories and 89 subcategories with each industry given an occupation survey.

Influence of live music on music industry
Introduction Music industry is arguably one of the largest and most dynamic of the entertainment industry. Music industry has evolved from one level to another since the origin of man. Music industry is very dynamic and keeps on changing with the change in all aspects of the society in terms of technology, tastes and preferences, marketing and communication.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Influence of live music on music industry specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Modern trends have introduced a variety of options for music industry especially in marketing. Things have changed from the traditional off shelf purchasing of music to more dynamic and interactive concept. Live music is an important part of music industry and this paper looks into how live music affect music industries. Sales Perhaps one of the most important uses of the live music is for marketing. The music industry has continually changed from the tr adition way where marketing was done through newspapers and media stations. The modern society has shifted from the ââ¬Å"give receiveâ⬠era to an interactive one. Music artists use live music to market their music since it is more effective (Knab and Day 7). Due to the emotional connection between the artists and the fans advertisement during live music shows is usually more effective as compared to other means of advertisement. A report by Wan argued that: Many retailers are looking to make and extensive involvement with live music an integral part of their marketing strategies citing consumer trends and the tenuous economic climate at retail as a reason for a move beyond more time proven methods. (Wan 43) By using live music concerts the retailers are able to narrow down on specific audience hence being more effective. Live shows go hand in hand with collaboration with other sponsors or even several artists holding such events together. Other promotional activities such as signing autographs giving out of promotional materials such as advertisement brochures and even selling of music in the live music events is a very effective tool of marketing. This has changed the way music industry markets its products (Lieberman and Esgate 245). Rearranging the Marketing Chain Live music enables the artists themselves to get access to their customers and this resulted to overriding middlemen whose role was to market music. With the current information avenues especially internet applications, music artists can use live music as an advertisement and then place their music on strategic locations such as internet and this has changed the whole marketing structure.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More I concur with Moon G that with the modern marketing strategies especially live music then the artists are able to cut on costs and save a lot more in the long run (Summer 243; Summers 2). Customer Experience Every business strives to create customer loyalty by providing customer experience. Live music is usually the best leverage when it comes to giving customer experience. Music artists use these shows to entertain their fans first hand as this is more interactive and emotional. The report by Wan claims that Live music is an important part of the overall music experience and we wanted to be closer to the customer (who loves music and loves live music shows) we want to offer the customer a richer experience than just buying the CD and going home with it. (Wan 43) Recording Industry Music recording has recorded a significance change from the tradition recording of audio to recording of video music however live music brought yet another revolution to the recording industry. Live music performances are usually recorded and may be sold out as a product or used for advertisement purposes. Much of the internet music promotion materials are usually live mu sic performances. We can agree with Hull in his observation about use of live music ââ¬Å"music videos and performances by popular recordings acts provide significant content for cable and broad-cast televisionâ⬠(Hull 2004). Live music as business There has been a noticeable shift of entertainment from the traditional listening to the music at home to the modern live entertainment. This may be attributed to the saturation of music in entertainment and advertisement media such as radio stations. People are no longer fascinated by listening music on the radio and instead prefer live music shows where there is more enthusiasm and the entertainment is more exciting. Live music has tapped into this and ticket selling for performances is the modern business. Britten has made similar observations in UK ââ¬Å"the UK live music scene is in robust health, with major music festivals now as much a part of the national calendar as Wimbledonâ⬠(Britten 83).Advertising We will wr ite a custom essay sample on Influence of live music on music industry specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More New business networks Live music has resulted to the emergence of new business networks that aim at utilizing the opportunities that come with live music performances. This is suggested by Poel and Rutten: ââ¬Å"there exists a complex network of business relationships between the live-concert sector, the broadcast media, and the recording industry; each time a musical property is used in any of these contexts, value is added to that propertyâ⬠(Poel and Rutten 7). Conclusion Live music has made a great impact in the music industry in terms of new marketing strategy, giving customers value for their money, brought change in the marketing structures and other different changes. The power and influence of live music cannot be ignored and anyone interested in music industry may need to invest more in understanding impact of live m usic. Works Cited Britten, Alan. Citing an Online Video with Chicago Authorââ¬Date Referencing
Citing an Online Video with Chicago Authorââ¬âDate Referencing Citing an Online Video with Chicago Authorââ¬âDate Referencing Previously, we looked at how to cite an online video using Chicagoââ¬â¢s footnote referencing. But The Chicago Manual of Style also sets out an authorââ¬âdate referencing system. So to make sure weââ¬â¢ve covered all our bases, this time weââ¬â¢re looking at citing an online video authorââ¬âdate style. In-Text Citations First of all, citations. As with any source in Chicago authorââ¬âdate referencing, citing an online video means giving the creatorââ¬â¢s surname and a date of publication in brackets: Some museums are now returning stolen artifacts (Colwell 2018). Here, weââ¬â¢re citing a TED Talk by Chip Colwell that was uploaded to YouTube in 2018. Weââ¬â¢ve cited Colwell in this case because gives the presentation, but with some videos you may want to cite the writer or director instead. It all depends on who the main creator is. The main difference from citing a print source comes when quoting a video. In the absence of page numbers to cite, youââ¬â¢ll have to include a timestamp for the part of the video cited: Discussing these returns, he describes this as ââ¬Å"plant[ing] seeds of hope in the ruins of the pastâ⬠(Colwell 2018, 7:18). Here, for instance, we can see that the quote comes from 7 minutes and 18 seconds into the video. Additional source information will then be given in the reference list at the end of the document. Reference List When you add an online video to your reference list, you need to provide enough information for readers to find it themselves. This should include at least most of the following: Surname, First Name. Year of publication. ââ¬Å"Video title.â⬠Host website. Format, video length. Uploader name (if different from creator). Date of access (if required). URL. You might not be able to find all this information, but this is fine as long as the video is easy to identify (keep in mind that URLs sometimes change, so you need more than just a link). To see how this would look in practice, weââ¬â¢ll create a reference for the video cited above: Colwell, Chip. 2018. ââ¬Å"Why museums are returning cultural treasures | Chip Colwell.â⬠YouTube. Video, 13:01. TED. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUUP2MMz7PU. We cite Chip Colwell as the author above, but we also include TED as the uploader. This is because the video is hosted on the TED YouTube channel.

Renaissance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Renaissance - Essay Example The Renaissance is generally accepted to have begun in the fourteenth century in the small and prosperous states of Italy namely, Florence, Sienna and Venice (1). Some historians have questioned both the starting date and the starting place of the Renaissance, crediting the period under the Carolingian rulers Charlemagne and Louis the Pious starting from 800 AD. Such a contention comes from the perspective that if a reawakening in culture and intellectual from the dark period of European history is the criterion for the renaissance, the renaissance started in 800 AD, under the Carolingian rulers. Such a claim is associated with the achievements of the Carolingian rulers. These rulers brought peace and security throughout most of Western Europe, which was in turmoil since the demise of the Roman Empire in the fifth century, when Alaric sacked Rome in 401 AD. There was deliberate effort on the part of these rulers to bring back some of the lost cultural and economic greatness lost with the Roman Empire. Charlemagne utilized the assistance of the intellectual Alcuin to set up a school system. Working with Benedict of Aniane, Louis the Pious made Benedictine monasticism a force of progress and civilization in Western Europe. The consequence of this combine of political and intellectual power was rise in culture and learning not experienced since the Roman Empire. However, the counter argument is that these changes were essentially within the clergy and lacked a wide range of social movements as evinced by the renaissance that started in Italy. (2). There is also some support for the view of Charles Homer Haskins in his book The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century that Europe starting from in the eleventh century. This period saw a vibrant, expanding, and tolerant society that offers comparison to the renaissance in the fourteenth century in Italy. (2). However this contention is not accepted
